!MARRIAGE: on 23 Oct 1831 Mary was married to Eldridge Porter, by John N. Clark, J.P. in Hamilton Co., Illinois.
BIOGRAPHY: John Averett and Jennett Gill were married in Barren Co., Kentucky. Their first child, Mary, was born Feb 28, 1807 in the same county in Kentucky. Her parents took her to Tennessee, then on to White County, Illinois, then to Hamilton county, Illinois, arriving there about 1830-1831. In 1832, Mary was lawfully married to Elbrige Gary Porter, from White County, Illinois, who was also raised in Kentucky. They lived here 5 or 6 years, having born to them three boys, who all died in infancy, all buried in the same graveyard in the Mayberry settlement South of and near the Averett farm, 9 miles South of McLeansborough, Hamilton County, Illinois.
In company with Elisha Averett, Mary's brother, they moved to Washington County, Missouri to work in some lead mines. One girl, Eliza Tennessee was born here, 1837. Another girl, Josephine Bonaparte, 1838. In the year of 1839, Mary Averett Porter's family moved to Adams Couty, Illinois, where her parents lived. About 1840 another son, George Averett Porter, was born to them. During this time, Elbrige Gary Porter went to Nauvoo, Illinois to work. When Mary heard from him again, he had been in a hospital five months in New Orleans, Louisiana. He wrote for Mary and his family to come to New Orleans. She hesitated because it was a sickly country. In 1840-1841, their son George Averett Porter died of scarlet fever. When next heard of, Elbrige Porter was in the lumber business, shipping lumber from Wisconsin down the Missiissippi. He was heard of from time to time in the same neighborhood. Mary made a living in the tailoring business. Her brother George Washington Gill Averett lived with her to assist her in making a living. Source: Journal of George Washington Gill Averett.
