CENSUS: Kelsey, Samuel Alexander Pagon (Male) In 1860, Samuel had a household of 6, a real wealth of $500, and a personal wealth of $400.
HISTORY: In 1870, he had a household of 8, a real wealth of $300, and a personal wealth of $200. We know little of the conditions which surrounded Alex in his early childhood years. He learned to chew tobacco when he was six years old. At an early age he started school. He was perhaps six years old. In the short time he was permitted to attend school, he got the rudiments of an education. He was able to read and write, although his spelling was rather poor. Alex served as an appretice for seven years. Sometime before his marriage he moved to Maury County, Tennessee becauses his wife was born there. He married Jenett Averett when he was nineteen years old. Their first son was Thomas Monroe Kelsey who was born in Maury County, Tennessee. They then moved to Caldwell County, Missouri and another child was born to them there. Alex was baptized 3 July 1835. Several children were born to them while they resided in Nauvoo. All of those children passed away in infancy. They had ten children, six of them lived to maturity, and five of them live in Utah. When the saints were expelled from Nauvoo the Kelsey family moved to Quincy until 1851. They then moved on to Utah and settled in Cottonwood, just outside of Salt Lake City. When Cache Valley was settled they moved there and built a home in Smithfield. Alex was about five feet inches tall. He was broad shouldered and had large muscles. He was strong in his youth. For many years he started out every Sunday morning to visit all of his great grandchildren who resided in Smithfield. During the later part of his life he was afflicted with a skin disease, which caused him great distress becuase it itched. In his last sickness he suffered great pain. He was only one month away from being 89 years old at the time of his death. His wife died a few years before him.

FOR CORRECTION: Ancestral File list another wife as Elzade Averett (AFN:3JMW-HG). This is the same person as Martha Elzade Averett.
Alonzo was the only survior of a fire at Fort Kanab Utah on December 14,1870, six other members of the Stewart family died.
