In the short time he was permitted to attend school, he got the rudiments of an education. He was able to read and write, although his spelling was rather poor. He married Jenett Averett when he was nineteen years old. Their first son was Thomas Monroe Kelsey who was born in Maury County, Tennessee. They then moved to Caldwell County, Missouri and another child was born to them there. Alex was baptized 3 July 1835. Several children were born to them while they resided in Nauvoo. All of those children passed away in infancy. They had ten children, six of them lived to maturity, and five of them live in Utah. When the saints were expelled from Nauvoo the Kelsey family moved to Quincy until 1851. They then moved on to Utah and settled in Cottonwood, just outside of Salt Lake City.
