Notes

BIOGRAPHY: Journal of George Washington Gill Averett: William Averett wh en last heard of was living on the Missouri River, I think, in Jackson Co unty. He had a wife and two or three children. He owned a ferry on the r iver and was attending the same about, or soon after, the L.D. Saints wer e driven from Jackson County, Missouri. By some means, unknown, someon e bored holes in his boat, and as they were crossing the river near the m iddle of the stream, they discovered the boat was sinking. They had to s wim or drown. Only one passenger whose name was Owens, who had a horse o n board that saved him, all the rest on board were drowned. William Aver ett swam to shore, looked back and saw on of his hired men in the act o f drowning. He turned back to help him and they both drowned. At last a ccount in April 1859, his wife and children still lived near the river; n othing has been heard from them since, up to this time, Dec. 22, 1859. (S pace was left here to write further account of this family, but nothing w as learned)".

BIOGRAPHY:
Source: Geneology of the first Generations in America William ran a ferr y on the Missouri River for a number of years. One day someone bored hol es in the boat, and it started sinking as they crossed the river. All ab oard had to swim or drown. William turned back to help him, and they bot h drowned. Only one passenger was saved, a man named Owens, who was abl e to cling to the horse he had with him. Everyone else drowned. The las t that was heard from Willia's wife and children indicated taht they wer e still living in the same vicinity.
