[281] HISTORY: Maria Barbara Zerwe or Zerbe was christened 20 Nov 1725 at East Camp, Livingston Manor, New York, the daughter of John Jacob Zerwe or Zerbe and Maria Catharine Leik or Leick. She was named after her grandmother, Maria Barbara Lei or Leick. When she was two years old, she migrated with her parents to Tulpehocken, Lancaster (now Berks) County, Pennsylvania. There she grew up in a German Lutheran community with many relatives around her. Like the Laux or Loucks family, this family also migrated from Germany to New York in 1709/10.
