[162] Rev. Thomas Crymes was a pioneer Baptist preacher in Lunenberg County, Virginia. He was the first pastor of the Tussakiah Baptist Church, located four miles out of Lunenberg Court House, the county seat of Lunenberg County, Virginia. In October I, Will Averitt, my wife, and daughter and I visited this once-famous church that was founded in 1776. We also took some pictures of the place.

While at the court house in this county seat, we found the will of the Rev. Thomas Crymes, dated in 1789, in which among other things, he deeded to my great, great grandmother a horse named "Prince" and a Negro named "Bob." This was the year that George Washington was elected president.

As I have stated, this Thomas Grimes, or Grymes as it is sometimes spelled, was known as Old Father Grimes, celebrated in early American poetry as "Old Father Grimes that good old man, we never shall see him more." He was a cousin to Lucy Crymes, the grandmother of the great Robert E. Lee. Lucy Crymes was known as the lowland beauty an it is said that General George Washington sought her hand in marriage. The present Queen of England also goes back to this same woman.
