HISTORY: Mariah came to Utah as a teenager with her famliy. Mariah had worked hard as a child, tending her brothers and sisters so her mother could work in a factory. She had very little schooling, but what books and education she had were paid for out of her own earnings from working in other households. She became an excellent cook and was remembered later in life as a quiet person who loved crocheting, houseplants and ice cream. Her hair never went gray. Mariah suffered from pain and ill health the latter part of her life. Mariah died suddenly on July 22, 1924. SOURCE: The Charles Shumway Family 1809-1979 When Maria was about thireteen her father was called by Brigham Young to help develop the Dixie country in southern Utah. They had lived for awhile in Provo, then they finally settled in Kanab. Here, at the age of seventeen, she married Wilson Glenn Shumway.
On December 14, 1879, Maria's husband took her and their two children to Arizona.
In 1883 the family moved to Shumway. During the years in Shumway, Mother bore two more sons and four daughters. She had one stillborn child. She suffered for over thirty years from gallstones.
Finally, the disease she had endured resulted in a jaundiced condition. She went to Los Angeles where her gallstones were removed. On July 22, 1924, at the age of 65, Maria Janette Averett Shumway went to meet the Mother she had so longed to see.

BIOGRAPHY: John Harvey married Eliza Averett, the 5th child of John and Jennett Gill. He was born in Lancestershire, Scotland on December 12, 1816. He was raised in Canada and had joined the Mormon Church there. While living in Payson County, Illinois he married Eliza. They had eight children, with only three children living to maturity. Their daughter Margaret Ann was the only child to have any posterity as her two living brothers never married. Eliza died in childbirth of her eighth child on 4 Jan 1853 in Cottonwood Creek in Salt Lake County and is buried in Salt Lake City, Utah.
After the death of Eliza, John married Anne Coop, a widow with one or two children. Anne Coop was English by birth. Soon after they moved to Provo Valley and raised a large family of seven children. In 1881 he was living in Heber, Utah, as a farmer. He died in Heber, Utah (Center Creek four miles from Heber) on July 24, 1887.
