BURIAL: Journal of George Washington Gill Averett states: He was buried near the old Shaw farm on the Misissippi River bluffs in Calhoon, Illinois.
BIOGRAPHY: Journal of George Washington Gill Averett states: Alexander Murray lived in Pike and Calhoon Counties, Illinois after his marriage to Mary Ellen Smith. He seemed to have the hand of fortune against him in losing his family, and trying at several different times in his poverty to gather with the saints of God at Great Salt Lake City, Utah. Through opposition of friends and relatives, and misfortune of different kinds, he failed to do so. Murray's wife, Mary Ellen Smith Averett and three children left Plesant Hill, Illinois on August 18, 1879. Accompanied by George Washington Gill Averett, Mary took her children: Harvey Smith, Mary Pyrenia Alice Smith and Oscar Shannon Averett Smith bound for Utah. They arrived in Washington, Washington Co., Utah on Sept 4, 1879. The three children were all baptized 6 Nov 1879 by C. McCreavy and confirmed by L. J. Jones. Mary Ellen was endowed in the St. George Temple on March 5, 1880. Murray lingered many years with different diseases, and spent a great deal of means with doctors at different times. He died in Belview, Calhoon Co., Illinois, Jan 26, 1875 and is buried near the old Shaw farm on the Mississippi River bluffs in Calhoon, Illinois.
