BIOGRAPHY: LEVI WALTER EVERTON
(1824-1856) Husband of Elenor Jennett Kelsey, niece of Elijah Averett Dau
ghter of Jennet Averett and Samuel Alexander Pagon Kelsey
(Written by W. M. Everton)
Levi Walter Everton was the only son in a family of girls and from wha
t I can learn he was greatly beloved by all his sisters. Apparently he w
as of a studious disposition as he acted as a surveyor in his early manho
od. We do not know when the move was made from Ohio to Quincy, Illinois b
ut the first information we have concerning Levi Walter, he lived in Quin
cy. His father and his sisters lived there, and his mother had died. W
e are not certain whether she came to Illinois or died in Ohio.
When the Saints were driven from Nauvoo, the Kelsey family moved from Nau
voo down the river to Quincy, and settled near the Everton family. Lev
i Walter Everton became a chum of the older son in the Kelsey family, Tom
my, and they visited at each other's homes naturally. The result of the
se visits was that Thomas fell in love with and married Levi Walter's si
ster, Sarah, and Levi Walter fell in love with and married Thomas' siste
r Elenor Jennet. They were married in 1849 when Elenor Jennet was ninete
en years old and Levi Walter twenty-five years of age.
After his marriage he worked in a stove foundry and continued to live i
n Quincy, having his home near the Mississippi River. In the foundry the
y used something which the family called 'black lead' for dusting the cas
tings, or blacking the stoves, or for some other purpose. Levi Walter wo
rked with this material until it got into his lungs and he died from lea
d poisoning.
Levi Walter was of a religious disposition, and undoubtedly should have a
ccepted the gospel had it been presented to him. At that time there wa
s no branch of the Church in Quincy. Levi Walter's father-in-law moved t
o Salt Lake City, Utah so that he had the privilege of associating with h
im for only a short period of time. Elenor Jennet, his wife, was young a
nd was perhaps unable to present the gospel to him. His brother-in-law
, Thomas Kelsey, never would have presented the gospel to him in a way th
at would convert him. His sister, Sarah, did not accept the gospel unti
l they had come in contact with other Latter-day Saints, and the gospel h
ad been preached to her by them. That he was of a religious turn of min
d is plainly evident from a poem, which was preserved by his sister, Sara
h. It was found among her belongings after she passed away.
