COMMODORE PERRY AVERETT
(1899-) grandson of Elijah Averett
Commodore Perry Averett was born in July 1899 in Springerville, Arizona
, the 12th child in a family of 14. His parents were Elisha and Mary Jan
e Averett and grandparents were Elijah Averett and Johanna Christine Neil
son.
His early life was spent on a farm and cattle ranch. When he was 16 he to
ok a train for Pasadena, California. He graduated from high school in Pas
adena in 1920 having completed the requirements in 3 years and receivin
g a Scholarship Pin for 90% plus average in grades. In high school he wa
s a member of the lightweight and varsity basketball teams, the YMCA team
s and three church teams.
Brother Averett was the treasurer of the first JR. Chamber of Commerce or
ganized west of Chicago. He moved to Los Angeles in 1921. His community a
ctivities included past president of the Rotary; member at large of the C
rescent Bay Council of Scouting; service on the Eagle Board of Review an
d member of the Board of Directors of Mar Vista Chamber of Commerce. He i
s chapter manager of the Bay Area Building Contractors Association and du
ring his spare time, he handles repairs, additions, and building of new h
omes for everyone with capital.
Brother Averett was baptized in Eager, Arizona, in the Little Colorado Ri
ver on Oct. 2, 1915, and he still remembers how cold the water was. His g
randfather Elijah Averett, joined the church in 1835, and was closely ass
ociated with the Prophet Joseph Smith and the early apostles of the churc
h. He served as head stone mason on the Kirtland, Nauvoo, St. George, an
d Manti Temples. He also worked on the Salt Lake Temple. His grandfathe
r drove the wagon in which Brigham Young's wife rode across the plains.
Commodore's father, Elisha, and mother were married in the St. George Tem
ple Feb. 6, 1879. Later his father and grandfather helped settle the pion
eers in St. John's Stake, Arizona.
With all this background in the church, Brother Averett became inactive a
s a young man and wishes he could now trade his 22 year perfect attendanc
e record at Rotary Meetings for perfect attendance at Sacrament Meeting
s for 22 years. In 1957, he felt the urge to again become active in the c
hurch and has been General Secretary of the Sr. Aaronic Priesthood; Presi
dent of the 9th Quorum of Elders; Chairman of the Building and Maintenanc
e Committee; Assistant Ward Clerk; Improvement Era Director for Mar Vist
a Ward and is now a member of the Stake YMMIA stake board as Stake Era Di
rector. He truly feels that his is fortunate to be a member of the churc
h and when he became an Elder he realized his dream of having his marriag
e to his lovely wife, Catherine Laurene, sealed in the Los Angeles Temple
.
LIVE BAPTISIMS: Commodore was baptized in Eager, Arizona, in the Littl
