BIOGRAPHY: Elijah had one child by the name of William.
MARRIAGE: Journal of George Washington Gill Averett states: Elijah was married in Cape Girardeau Co., Missouri.
BIOGRAPHY: JGWGA: "John Averett, was born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, 29 April 1780 and died 19 April 1847, in Pleasant Hill, Pike Co., Illinois. He had one or two sisters whose names I never knew. There was one brother, Elijah who was born abt. 1779 in Virginia. Sometime after the Revolutionary War, my grandfather (Aaron Averett) died. My grandmother (Dinah Ray Averett) moved south to Georgia and north to South Carolina. While my father, John, was yet a boy his mother bound him out to learn the "hatter" trade. Being something he did not like, he served out his time and never worked one day at the business. He turned his attention to Shoe and Boot making and wagon making. He always had a farm and taught all of his boys to farm. Some of his sons learned trades; Elisha, Elijah and John learned to lay stone. I (G.W.G. Averett), was a wheelwright and gunsmith".
"By some means or other, his brother older than him, Elijah Averett, came into possession of my father's part of the Averett estate, either by being administrator or because he was the eldest. It all came to the amount of fifteen hundred dollars about the year 1800 or thereabouts. Elijah Averett moved to Missouri and was married in Capejevido County (Cape Girardeau). Soon after he had his house burn and all the papers to show anything about the affair of the estate of the Averett family was lost. He lost almost all that he was worth, so he and my father both lost their interests in the Averett estate which was considerable. Elijah only had one child whose name was William Averett. Soon after the burning out of his home, Elijah was out with his gun hunting squirrels in warm weather, and in stepping back to get a chance to shoot, he came near enough to a rattle snake that the snake bit him on the heel and he had to be carried to his house and only lived one-half hour".

Source: Geneology of the first generations in America Either by being appointed administrator or by some other means, John's older brother Elijah came into possession of the Aaron Averett estate, which amounted to about $1800. Elijah moved to Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, in 1800, and soon after, his house burned, thus destroying all papers concerning the estate. After that, John lost interest in the matter.
