BIOGRAPHY SOURCE: HISTORY OF ANNA MORRIS BUTTLER.
Anna Morris Buttler, mother of David William Campbell's first wife, Elisabeth, was born 13 June 1816 in Merthye Tydfil, South Wales, where she became a member of the Latter-day Saints faith. After the death of her husband and some of her children she worked hard to save enough money to pay passage for herself, a daughter, Elisabeth, age 14 and a son, William R., age five years, on the steam ship (Samuel Curling) bound for America.
When they landed at Boston they traveled westward joining the Edward Bunker handcart company. In route Elisabeth became very ill with cholera but was made well through the faith and good care of her good mother.
Elisabeth's entrance into Salt Lake Valley was on a load of wood. A man passing by saw the children walking. When informed that they were going to Salt Lake he helped them on the load of wood, and they entered Salt Lake City 2 October 1856. When Elisabeth was 16 years of age she married Charles Henry Gates in Ogden, Utah. Three children were born to them. On the 25th of August 1863 Charles and three other men went hunting a bear, which escaped. Well the bear found the men. First he charged at one man and tore his coat from his back. Charles came down from a tree to shoot the bear, but the animal quickly turned and grabbed him. The other men in the tree were afraid too, for fear of hitting Charles. The angry animal mutilated his body, which caused hi death six days later. After three years passed Elisabeth married David William Campbell by whom she had eight children. She died in Escalante 10 November 1920.
