DEATH: After the death of Aaron Averett in 1789, the widow went with th e children to Georgia, then later moved back to North or South Carolina . While his son John was yet a child, his mother "bound" him out to lear n the hatter's trade. He served his time, but never worked at the busine ss, which he did not like. He turned his attention instead to shoe and b oot making, wagon making, and farming. He taught all of his boys to farm . Some of them also learned trades: Elisha, Elijah and John learned to l ay stone. George Washington Gill Averett, was a wheelright and a gunsmith .
