DEATH: After the death of Aaron Averett in 1789, the widow went with the children to Georgia, then later moved back to North or South Carolina. While his son John was yet a child, his mother "bound" him out to learn the hatter's trade. He served his time, but never worked at the business, which he did not like. He turned his attention instead to shoe and boot making, wagon making, and farming. He taught all of his boys to farm. Some of them also learned trades: Elisha, Elijah and John learned to lay stone. George Washington Gill Averett, was a wheelright and a gunsmith.
