Notes

SOURCE: MARY STEWART HICKS. Jessie G. was a messenger from Roaring Rive r Baptist Church to the Stockton Valley Assn. in 1812. He was sent a s a messenger in 1842. In 1844, the Roaring River Church dropped from th e Stockton Valley Assn. Jesse had long hair and wore buckskins. A stor y goes that someone surnamed Cox made a remark after "Gib" (Jesse) and " Eb" (Samuel Kendrick ) had drunk some bitters at "old man Beck's" at Be e Cave. One of them returned and shot through Cox's house. Don't know w hich way "Eb" went, but "Gib" ran down the mountain straight across fro m Will Gregg's place. Coxes were shooting at him and he crossed the rive r and hid behind a dune of dirt. It cost "Gib" all his interest in lan d that his father Benjamin K. willed to him to pay lawyers. Five or si x charges were filed against "Gib", "Eb" and Bill Peal. "Gib" spent 3 da ys in the penitentiary, and was pardoned. "Eb" skipped bond. Don't kno w what happened to Peal. Later, Nancy Jane Stewart, "Eb"'s sister and hi s Grandfather Benjamin K.(this could also have been Bird K. Stewart, hi s uncle) went to Galveston and Benjamin K. sent back a picture of himsel f in a bathing suit. They were gone for sometime. It developed that the y had stayed in Galveston long enough to get the picture made (The pictur e was for Bird K's family to show when anyone checked the whereabouts o f Benjamin K.; then B.K. went to Kimball Co., where "Eb" had gone and sta yed with "Eb" until he died.
(Wonder if Eb was sick & Benjamin K. went there to be with him, knowin g he was dying?)
"Eb" was the son of Samuel N. Stewart.
