Fiske on June 1, 1997, states that Lawrence Matthews is supposed to be the father of James Matthews who married Sarah Stewart. Lawrence Matthews was from the Hillsboro Dist., Chatham Co., N.C. and is listed in the 1790 Census. At present Lawrence's wife is unknown. Researcher: Georgenia Stewart

Kinfolk Our Noble English Ancestry" by Deward Charles Williams, Sr. in the public library in Cookeville, Putnam County, Tennessee....
"1. LAWRENCE MATTHEWS, the ancestor of our Overton Co.
Tennessee family of Matthews, may be the same man who is listed in the 1790 Census for the Hillsboro District of Chatham Co. N.C. The
name of his wife is unknown.
Children: (Still quoting now) probably among others.
2. JAMES MATTHEWS, born 1780, son of (1) was b. probably in Chatham Co. N.C. 1780. He marrried 1802 Sarah, b. 1780, dau. of Samuel and Lydia Stewart. He was living in Overton Co. Tenn. when on 4-5-1810 he received a Tennessee Land Grant, No. 2097 for 200 acres
of land at the headwaters of Roaring River. See Overton Deeds, "B" pages 259-60." (end of quote)
