Notes

Americus was nicknamed "Mack". Joyce Lindstrom has mother of Americus Wi lson Stewart as Charlotte Williams. I think this is in error as Charlott e Williams died in 1873. Americus was born in 1881. So his correct moth er is Mariah W. Johnson. Researcher: Georgenia Stewart.

NOTES: David Stewart left a will dated 24 Nov 1801 in Stokes County, Nor th Carolina. Researcher: Joyce Lindstrom.

BIRTH: The 1759, 1761, and 1768 tax lists of Rowan Co., North Carolina a re use to determine the birth order of the children. The 1759 tax list r ecords Samuel with his two adult sons, David and John Stewart. The 176 1 tax list records Samuel with his sons; David, John, Samuel, Joseph an d Isaiah. The 1768 tax list records Samuel with David, John, Joseph, Isa iah and Benjamin, the baby in the family. Researcher: Joyce Lindstrom.

WILL: In the same year that Samuel made out his will, he passed away. O n 11 January 1771, just three years later, Lydia made a will and as the r ecords show she undoubtedly died almost immediately after making the will , because the death date and will date are shown on the record as the sam e day. This probably isn't the case, but certainly she didn't live long a fter she made the will. Samuel had willed the specific property to his fo ur older sons and so in Lydia's will she willed specifically to the othe r children, however, she did mention all the different ones in the will w hich is as follows:
"In the name of God, Amen. I, Lydia Stewart of Rowan County in North Caro lina, being weak of body, but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be give n unto God, do dispose of my worldly estate as follows: I will that out o f my estate, a list to be obtained for a certain tract of land on the sou th side of the Yadkin River, adjoining Benjamin and James Herson's land , and if such title can be obtained, to be sold and the sales thereof t o be equally divided unto my beloved sons, David, Samuel, John, Joseph, a nd Isaiah Stewart.
Item: I give and bequeath unto my granddaughter, Lydia, the daughter o f my son David, my bed and furniture there unto belonging.
Item: I give unto my son DAVID, my bed and furniture thereunto belonging . Item: I give unto my son Benjamin an iron pot now in his possession.
Item: I give unto my son Joseph's daughter, Lydia, a heifer or a young c ow.
Item: I bequeath unto my beloved sons, David, Samuel, Isaiah and John St ewart, all the rest of my estate to be equally divided amongst them, an d their heirs. I do nominate and appoint my sons David Stewart and Samue l Stewart executors of this, my last will and testament, Ratifying, allow ing, and confirming this to be my Last Will and Testament and do utterl y disannul all former wills by me made in testimony whereof I set my han d and seal. January 11, 1771." (Please note that Lydia Stewart made ou t her will stating she lived in Rowan County, North Carolina. Actually S urry Co, North Carolina was created from Rowan Co. in 1770.)

Notes: On July 25, 2003, Eleanor Halstead informed me that DNA evidenc e has been proven to link David Stewart (abt 1734) and Joseph Stewart (ab t 1740) as brothers. These are the sons of Samuel Stewart and Lydia Harri son.
