Notes

n County Historical Society Journal, April 1977, Vol III. No. 1.
NOTES: Joseph Stewart was 49 in the 1850 Overton Co., Tennessee census.
NOTES: Known Facts of the ancestry of Joseph Stewart of Johnson County
, Arkansas only go back to his birth in North Carolina in 1801, as show
n on census records and gathered from his descendants. The date and plac
e of his marriage are not known to those descendents but the census recor
ds show all of his older children were born in Tennessee.
Washington City, February 17, 1849
Sir:
In prusuance of out conversation of this morning, concerning the appl
icaton of Mr. Joseph Stewart for a bounty land warrant, I present you th
e following statement of facts, which, together with his papers on file i
n your office, will I trust bring him within the provisions of the Law, a
nd enable you to issue him the certificate.
This certifies that Joseph Stewart, of Johnson County, Arkanss, lat
e a member of Captain Patrick's Company (C) of Arkansas Mounted Volunteer
s, entered and left the service under these circumstances. He enlisted a
s a Private in said Company, and was regularly enrolled about the first o
f July 1846. Subsequently, he was promoted to be a Second Lieutenant i
n the same Company, and served faithfully, actively, and with remarkabl
e efficiency, in that capacity, until some time in the following Decembe
r or January, when his health became so infirm as to disable him from th
e active performance of his duty. In this condition, he yielded, but mos
t reluctantly, to the persuasions of his brother officers and other frien
ds, and resigned his commission - not for the purpose of leaving the Army
, if it could be avoided, but because it was desirable that the duties wh
ich he had become too feeble to perform might be assumed and performed b
y another, these duties being necessary for the discipline and welfare o
f the Company." There is MUCH more to this letter, including an account o
f his performance, "heroic," at the Battle of Buena Vista. If anyone woul
d like the complete narrative contact me at rogwat@ipa.net and I'll be ha
ppy to send it on.
