Obituary:
Stafford: Graveside services for Mrs. Mary Myrtle Edwards, 93, who died S at., Sept. 25, 1982 in the Mt. Graham Comm. Hosp. in Safford, were conduc ted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, in the Safford Cem. with Pastor Phil Tut or officiating.
The life story was given by Dennis Poer and the benediction was also offe red by Mr. Poer. Casket bearers were Danny Haralson, Heath Haralson an d Dennis Poer. The honorary bearers were Jeff Poer, Todd Poer and Farrel l Haralson.
Mrs. Edwards was born on June 8 1889, in London, TX, a daughter of Jame s Breckinridge Stewart and Mary Banders Stewart. In 1897 she moved wit h her family to Silver City, NM where she attended school and graduated f rom the 8th grade in 1905. She was married to Thomas Jefferson Edwards o n Dec. 25, 1905. He preceded her in death in 1949.
Mimie, as she was affectionally known by her family and friends, worked o n many ranches throughout NM and AZ, serving as chief cook and housekeepe r while her husband was ranch foreman. They moved to the Gila Valley i n 1928, where they bought a farm in Artesia and then moved to Stafford i n 1945.
During World War II, she was the supervisor of the WPA cannery operatio n and later manager of the WPA sewing room in Stafford. After the deat h of her husband in 1949, she was somewhat "adopted" by the Heath Haralso n family, as she had no children of her own. This became a lasting and r ewarding friendship for over 30 years.
She is survived by one sister, Tressa McCartney, of National City, CA. Ar rangements were under the direction of the Caldwell Funeral Home of Staff ord.
