SOURCE: Ramona Kitchen, Ina Porter, and Corris Brooksby, grandaughters o
f Elijah Averett and Johanne Neilsen.
After the death of Aaron Averett (John's father) in 1789, the widow wen
t with the children to Georgia, then later moved back to North Carolina o
f South Carolina. While John was yet a child, his mother "bound" him ou
t to learn the hatter's trade. He served his time, but never worked at t
he business, which he did not like. He turned his attention instead to s
hoe and boot making, wagon making, and farming. He taught all of his boy
s to farm. Some of them also learned trades: Elisha, Elijah and John le
arned to lay stone. One son, George Washington Gill, was a wheelwright a
nd gunsmith.
"Either by being appointed administrator or by some other means, John's o
lder brother Elijah came into possession of the Aaron Averett estate, whi
ch amounted to about $1800. Elijah moved to Cape Girardeaa County, Misso
uri, in 1800, and soon after, his hous burned, thus destroying all the pa
pers concerning the estate. After that, John lost interest in the matter
.
"John Averett's mother, as stated, moved with her children from Georgia t
o one of the Carolinas. There John grew to manhood, and married a woma
n whose name i unknown. After the birth of a son, the wife became untru
e to him, and they ceased to live together. After this, he moved to Barr
on County, Kentucky, wher he met Jennette Gill, who was born December 5
, 1786, in Barron County, Kentucky the daughter of George and Jennette Ha
milton Gill.
"They were lawfully married in Barron County, Kentucky, on May 1, 1806, a
nd had born to them a daughter, Mary Averett, on Feb 28, 1807. Soon afte
r the birth o Mary, John was sent with a government surveying party to th
e wilds of Tennessee in the region of the Cumberland and Duck Rivers. Af
ter surveying there for som time, he became satisfied with the country an
d decided to move to Tennessee. "Shortly after, he brought his wife, chil
d, and his father-in-law, George Gill, to Maury County, Tennessee. Ther
e ten other children were born to them. "Soon after the birth of the las
t child, John Averett went to Illinois with some of his neighbors, to se
e the ocuntry, and bought himself a place in White County, Illinois. H
e returned, sold his farm in Tennessee to John Commel, and in 1830 move
d his family to Illinois. Jennette and her husband, S.A.P. Kelsey, accom
panied them. After a short time, they traded this place for one in Hamil
ton County, nine miles south of McLain Burrow, (McLadnsboro) in a place k
nown as Maberry Settlement, on the north fork of the Salina River. The
y were very comfortably situated there, owning 80 acres of land, 40 whic
h were under cultivation. They seemed contented there until the spring o
f 1835 when they were visited by two men, elders of the Church of the Lat
ter Day Saints (Mormons), who preached to them the tenets of this religio
n. "The father and mother, with five of their children and their sons-in
-law, embraced this religion. In 1837, John sold his Hamilton County pla
ce and relocated at Caldwell, Missouri, where some of his children were a
lready living. It seems they were persecuted here by border ruffians wh
o did not like religion of any kind, so they went back across the river i
nto Illinois. They crossed the river at Hannibal, Missouri, going two an
d one-half miles from Payson, Adams County, Illinois, where they rented s
ome ground and stayed for a year. Then they moved down to Pike County, I
llinois, 12 miles south of the county seat. Later John bought more lan
d near Pleasant Hill and worked there for five or six years unti his heal
th began to fail. He passed away April 19, 1847.
"After John Averett's death, the widow went to live with her daughter, wh
o had married E.J. Harper. She lived there for about five years untile P
yrenia died, after which the son-in-law made her feel so unwelcome that s
he went to her son, George Washington Gill Averett, who in the meantime h
ad married Nancy Ann Turnbaugh.
"On Novemeber 20, 1855 Jennette Averett, widow of John Averett, died an
d was buried on the famlily lot near Pleasant Hill, Illinois." This histo
ry of John Averett was copied from the book The Averitt Family in America
, by Will F. Averitt, who gives credit to the Averetts living in Utah. H
e says much of this material came from the journal of George Washington G
ill Averett.
