Benjamin K. Stewart was the 4th child of Samuel Stewart & Mary "Polly" Kitcher Stewart. He was born 3-23-1808 in Overton Co., TN & died 9-24-1872 in Travis Co., TX. Benjamin's father Samuel owned land in Overton Co., TN along the Roaring River. B.K. was a messenger of the Roaring River Church to the Stockton Valley Assn. in 1812. He was sent as a messenger in 1820 & 1836. In 1844, the Roaring River Church dropped from the Stockton Valley Assn. Samuel & Polly did not come to TX. Benjamin & Sarah sold out in Overton Co., TN, bringing their family of four boys & one girl; Jessie Gilbert "Gib", Samuel N., James P. "Jim", Bird K. & Sarah Frances. They went through Illinois, then came through Arkansas & spent some time there, travelling with John Gilbert and Benjamin Hansford Stewart; then on to TX, first to Burnet Co. in the late 1840s or early 1850s. They acquired land between South Gabriel and Oatmeal Creeks.
Benjamin active in Mount Horeb Lodge, in 1856 deeded 25 acres of land along with 25 acres donated by Samuel Mather for the lodge on which to erect a lodge bldg. Mt. Horeb Lodge was originally at Gabriel Mills & the Charter was granted 1-21-1854. The lodge continued to function at Gabriel Mills until a fire ln 12-19-1915 which destroyed the lodge building & its contents. Following the fire, the members decided to rebuild the lodge at Mahomet which is a few miles to the north & in Burnet Co. In 1917, a history of the Mt. Horeb Lodge was written by Benjamin Hansford Stewart, who was 74 years old at that time. In this account, he said that he came to Texas in 1851 & was 8 years old. The first petition for degrees were from E. Stevenson, M.S. Skaggs, I.M. Brown, Dr. Thoma Moore, B.K. Stewart, Norman Miller, John Atkinson & W. O. Spencer. The first trio to be exalted were Thos. Moore, B.K. Stewart & E. Stevenson. Records in the Masonic Library in Waco shows that Benjamin K. Stewart, Mt. Horeb Lodge #137, located at Gabriel Mills was initiated 6-17-1854., passed 9-2-1854 & raised 10-7-1854, Demitted 10-2-1858. Offices he held was Treasurer 1855-56 & Chaplain 1858. (Some of this information may be found in the book "Culture of the Shin Oak Ridge Folk" by J. Gordon Bryson (in Austin Library 976.41). His name appears on a historical marker in Mahomet, TX.
In 1856, he moved to Travis Co., filed a land grant for 160 acres near the mouth of Cow Creek & lived there until his death in 1872. He had 497 acres on the Colorado River, 50 acres on the Colorado near Hurst Creek, 160 acres on Cow Creek and 130 acres between South Gabriel and Oatmeal Creeks. B.K. Stewart Abstract No. 2570, awarded on 7-21-1903, which consisted of 100 acres ;No. 2476 which consisted of 320 acres & No. 2453, which consisted of 320 acres in Travis Co., TX. Land out of Fedele Suholzer, I. H. Pearson, B. K. Stewart and E. L. Harrison Surveys.
Some of the land was passed down to the next generations. Some of it at Graveyard Point/Hurst Creek/Lake Travis was inherited by his grandson, Albert Kendrick Stewart. After A.K.'s death, his wife, Annie Lucinda Collier Stewart subdivided the land called the Annie Stewart Subdivision. Most of the land inherited by A.K. & Annie's children has been sold. With high taxes, and no income from the land, it had to be sold.
Benjamin K. & Sarah were originally buried in the Hudson Bend Cemetery on the Colorado River, (now Lake Travis) but in 1936, with the addition of the Mansfield Dam, which flooded old homesteads and cemeteries, they were moved to Teck Cem., RR620 Travis Co., TX. Ivan M. Stewart, Benjamin K.'s Gr Grandson, although young, remembered being at the Hudson Bend Cemetery when Benjamin K.'s grave was removed. All that remained of his wooden casket was a small section of dark dirt.
Benjamin K., Sarah, their son, Bird K. Stewart & wife, Isabelle "Bell" Brawley Stewart & Bird K. & Isabelle's sons Sidney Willis Stewart & Ida Hudson Stewart, James Brawley "Jim" Stewart, (never married), Andrew Milton Stewart & Pearl Yet Stewart & daughters, Mary Alice Stewart Combs (Wm. M. Combs) & Armeva B. "Minty B." Stewart (never married) are buried in Teck Cem. Their daughter Nora Stewart Eck (Henry Eck) are buried in Oakwood Cem., Austin, TX. There are a number of Stewarts & their descendants buried/will be buried in Teck Cem. Bird K.'s son Albert Kendrick Stewart & Annie Lucinda Collier Stewart are buried in Austin Memorial Park, Austin, TX.
Teck was a small community that had a general store owned by Leonard Teck, once run by Albert Kendrick Stewart, Leonard's wife's brother. There was also a Church of Christ Tabernable and Teck School. All that remains now is the cemetery. Relatives, friends, old Teck school friends gather at the Teck Cemetery twice a year, in May & Oct. to clean the cemetery & visit.
Benjamin was listed in the 1830 and 1840 census of Overton County, Tennessee, the 1850 census of Lawrence County, Arkansas, and moved to Burnet County, Texas prior to moving to Travis County, Texas where he died.
