NOTES: According to family records handed down to me, John Matthews die d in 1823. His wife, Elizabeth died about the same time and the family w as split into half. Half of them ended up in Madison Co., Illinois bein g raised by the Howard family and the other half remained in Overton Co. , Tennessee being raised by the Matthews family. The Matthew Pitts bibl e which Donna Boden has in her possession states that John Matthews die d 25 Oct 1822. I'm not sure the last child listed in the Bible record be longed to John Matthews and his wife, Elizabeth Howard or to their oldes t son, Abraham, who married Driscilla in Overton Co., Tennessee before th at date. All we know about John Matthews is that he was killed or wounde d by the Indians. The Indians had surrounded the soldiers near the ban k of the Missouri River. He was seriously wouneded and had not a chanc e of escape so he shot his horse and jumped into the river and sank. Thi s was taken from an article found in the History of Overton Co., Tennesse e, page 395-396. Researcher: Joyce Lindstrom and Donna Boden.

DEATH: I wrote one letter to A. H. Matthews, stating specifically the ci rcumstances respecting his fathers death. I also sent one in or to his l ast which contained a piece of a newspaper which had General Ashley's sta tement of the battle. In it the first one contained the money ?? five d ollars in a bank note the bank not recollected. Both of the letters I su ppose has been miscarried. Wm. Williamson was the man that was by his si de when he was shott. Both were swimming in the river to get to the boat . There was 14 or 15 men were killed at the same time other ???. I shal l write to Abraham ?? shortly. Give my respects to all those who inquir e after me. I am your ?? John Howard. SOURCE: 24 March 1824 letter fro m John Howard written to William Stewart.
