!DEATH: Frederick S. Dellenbaugh identifies the place of the killing of E lijah Averett, Jr. by Indians. In 1871 he records: We passed the very s mall settlement of Clarkdale, (Skutumpah) and all the next morning, Jun 1 , (1871) our way led over rolling meadows covered with fine grass but abo ut noon this ended and we entered the broken country of the upper Paria , with gullies and gulches barren and dry the rest of the day. In one o f the dry gulches we passed a grave, marked by a sandstone slab with E. A . cut on it, which the wolves had dug out, leaving the human bones scatte red around. We could not stop to reinter them. They were the remains o f Elijah Averett, Jr. a young Mormon who was killed while pursuing Piute s in 1866.
Local cowboys reinterred the remains and put up a cedar post with young A verett's name carved upon it to mark the spot. Years later some Boy Scou ts from Tropic, Utah, put up a permanent marker and the post was taken t o Tropic. It is now on display at the Museum in Tropic. John H. Johnso n supplied a lovely red sand stone for the permanent marker, and local Da ughters of Utah Pioneers supplied the brass plate with his ame and date s of birth and death upon it. DEATH: Our Pioneer Heritage, Vol. 16, p.291
During the terrible days of the Black Hawk war the towns of southern Uta h suffered from Indian raids. Their cattle were being stolen, colonists k illed and villages burned. The haunts of these Indians in eastern Utah wh ere the Grand and Green rivers meet, history says, is one of the wildes t parts of America. In the summer of 1866, an expedition under Captain Ja mes Andrus of Saint George, was conducted into this unexplored region wit h the [p.292] determination to bring the Indians to peace. Levi Edgar You ng in "Founding of Utah" says that for adventure and bravery this expedit ion has rarely been equaled in the annals of our western history. Lemue l Hardison Redd was an officer under Captain Andrus' command in this expe dition. They followed Indian trails into remote parts that are still unkn own. The command was waylaid by Indians. Elijah Averett was killed and ot hers wounded. I wonder if our appreciation measures equal to the sacrific es and hardships endured to make our homes and our lives safe and happy.
