NOTES: Benton grew up to manhood by the close of the War. He was to you
ng to go into the Army. I shall relate an incident that occurred at Rich
ison (James Richardson) Copeland. John Simpson came in from the war, an
d run with Benton. They were at dinner when the girls saw the Tinkerite
s coming. They had their horses saddled and hitched to the gate. They s
prang into their saddle. One of the girls opened the gate and they fle
d at top speed up the mountain. The girl filled the gate with rails so t
hey had to dismount to move the rails from the gate. The boys made goo
d their escape. Miss Copeland on seeing the enemy arriving blew a rams h
orn to warn the neighbors and threw the horn in the cabbage patch. The
y could not find the horn until fall when they cut the cabbage. The hor
n had hooked arouund a cabbale stalk. Benton and Simpson left and went t
o Texas. Benton located at Denton, Texas. He lived and died there. By F
rances Matthew Fleming. Source: History of Overton Co., Tennessee. Res
