HISTORY: Mariah came to Utah as a teenager with her famliy. Mariah ha d worked hard as a child, tending her brothers and sisters so her mothe r could work in a factory. She had very little schooling, but what book s and education she had were paid for out of her own earnings from workin g in other households. She became an excellent cook and was remembered l ater in life as a quiet person who loved crocheting, houseplants and ic e cream. Her hair never went gray. Mariah suffered from pain and ill he alth the latter part of her life. Mariah died suddenly on July 22, 1924 . SOURCE: The Charles Shumway Family 1809-1979. When Maria was about th ireteen her father was called by Brigham Young to help develop the Dixi e country in southern Utah. They had lived for awhile in Provo, then the y finally settled in Kanab. Here, at the age of seventeen, she married W ilson Glenn Shumway.
On December 14, 1879, Maria's husband took her and their two children t o Arizona.
In 1883 the family moved to Shumway. During the years in Shumway, Mothe r bore two more sons and four daughters. She had one stillborn child. S he suffered for over thirty years from gallstones.
Finally, the disease she had endured resulted in a jaundiced condition. S he went to Los Angeles where her gallstones were removed. On July 22, 19 24, at the age of 65, Maria Janette Averett Shumway went to meet the Moth er she had so longed to see.
