!BURIAL: Mahomet Cemetery, Mahomet, Burnet Co., Texas

BIOGRAPHY: John Gilbert was sent as a messenger from the Roaring River C hurch, Overton Co., Tennessee, a member of the Stockton Valley Assn. Th e church dropped from the Stockton Valley Assn. in 1844. He lived and own ed property on Sulphur Lick Branch on the waters of the Roaring River i n Overton Co.,Tennessee John Gilbert sold his property in Feb. 1850 and m oved to Lawrence Co., Arkansas as 1850 census shows. They came to Texa s by way of train in 1851 or 1852 and settled in the Gabriel Mills commun ity on the North San Gabriel, western edge of Williamson Co., Texas. Joh n Gilbert had made a previous trip to Arkansas, after 1830, but he did no t stay there. He died in Mahomet, Burnett, Texas. He was a Christian Min ister.

!MARRIAGE: J. G. Stewart married Amanda Tannison, in Feb 1874 in Burne t County, Texas. The J.P. was C. C. Stewart. I assume this is Christophe r Columbus Stewart Source: Burnet County Marriage Records, Book A., 1868 -1874, R-Y, page 253. Researcher: Georgenia Stewart, 22 March 2000.

Notes for JOHN GILBERT STEWART
There is the following account of the STEWART family's arrival in Texas i n The Land of Good Water, by Clara Stearns Scarbrough :
"John G. STEWART and family left Tennessee for Texas in 1851, had their h orses stolen by Indians in Houston, finally reached Gabriel Mills on Marc h 5, 1852. The STEWART women took their muskets when they did the famil y wash in the San Gabriel River. When serious threats of Indiant attack w ere rumored, the women and children were moved to Fort Black 25 miles u p the North Gabriel until danger was over. "
This book also states that the STEWARTs "put up a log store" in the Gabri el Mills community.
John and Margaret STEWART and their family are on the 1860 Williamson Cou nty census but are not found on the 1870 Williamson County census. I do n ot know at what point they moved to Burnet County but the Gabriel Mills c ommunity is very near the border of Williamson and Burnet Counties .
Wife was Margaret Copeland.
John G. Stewart and wife Sarah were on the 1870 census in Burnet Co., T X
The Stewarts were members of the Christian Church and John G. Stewart wa s a minister. he performed many early marriages in Williamson and Burne t Co. He was a Mason and member of the Mt. Horeb Lodge, then located at G abriel Mills in 1855 and later moved to Mahomet in 1857.(The above from t he "Burnet County History" pages 304 and 305 sent by Tem Moody .
