Obituary:
Stafford: Graveside services for Mrs. Mary Myrtle Edwards, 93, who died Sat., Sept. 25, 1982 in the Mt. Graham Comm. Hosp. in Safford, were conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, in the Safford Cem. with Pastor Phil Tutor officiating.
The life story was given by Dennis Poer and the benediction was also offered by Mr. Poer. Casket bearers were Danny Haralson, Heath Haralson and Dennis Poer. The honorary bearers were Jeff Poer, Todd Poer and Farrell Haralson.
Mrs. Edwards was born on June 8 1889, in London, TX, a daughter of James Breckinridge Stewart and Mary Banders Stewart. In 1897 she moved with her family to Silver City, NM where she attended school and graduated from the 8th grade in 1905. She was married to Thomas Jefferson Edwards on Dec. 25, 1905. He preceded her in death in 1949.
Mimie, as she was affectionally known by her family and friends, worked on many ranches throughout NM and AZ, serving as chief cook and housekeeper while her husband was ranch foreman. They moved to the Gila Valley in 1928, where they bought a farm in Artesia and then moved to Stafford in 1945.
During World War II, she was the supervisor of the WPA cannery operation and later manager of the WPA sewing room in Stafford. After the death of her husband in 1949, she was somewhat "adopted" by the Heath Haralson family, as she had no children of her own. This became a lasting and rewarding friendship for over 30 years.
She is survived by one sister, Tressa McCartney, of National City, CA. Arrangements were under the direction of the Caldwell Funeral Home of Stafford.
