NOTES: Jesse Renfro, who lives a mile and a half east of Troy, Jarvis To wnship, was one of the oldest resident of Madison County. He was born i n Lincoln County, Kentucky, in 1796. In the year 1810, when he was fourt een, his father, James Renfro, emigrated from Kentucky to Illinois. Th e family spent the winter of 1810-1811 in Ridge Prairie, three miles sout h of Troy. A short distance from Downing's station was a fort that had be en erected for the protection of the settlers against the Indians at th e edge of the present county of St. Clair. In the spring of 1811, the fa mily moved to section twenty-four of township three, range eight. Jame s Renfro died in the fall of 1814, while on a visit to Kentucky. In th e spring of 1814, Jesse Renfro, then not quite eighteen, enlisted as a mo unted ranger in Capt. Samuel Whiteside's company which was engaged in th e protection of the frontier settlements. Jesse served a year as a range r and six months additional in the militia service. In September, 1817 , he married Letty West, daughter of Isaac West, one of the pioneer settl ers of the present Collinsville township, and settled in section eleven o f Jarvis township, where he has resided ever since. Jesse and Letty live d together quietly on this spot nearly sixty-five years, until the deat h of Mrs. Renfro, which occurred in March, 1882. History of Madison Co. , Illinois, pages 439

Among the early churches of the Jarvis township was the Gilead Methodis t church, which stood on section fourteen. This was the first building e rected in the township for religious purposes. The church was also use d as a school-house and Jesse Renfro taught here several years between 18 30 and 1840. History of Madison Co., Illinois, pages 440
