BIOGRAPHY: Stewart Clan Magazine, June 1947, Vol XXIV: No12 : William St
ewart born in Stokes (or Forsyth) County, N.C. about 1780, went with hi
s parents to Overton (then Davidson or Sumner)County, Tennessee when rath
er young. There he married Elizabeth Van Hooser (or Van Hoosen), daughte
r of Abraham and Mary (Wilhelms) Van Hooser. They moved about 1811 to Ma
dison Co., Ill., to which locality other members of the Stewart family al
so removed. However, they returned to Overton County during the War of 1
812 and remained a few years before going again to Illinois. William wen
t off and left his family, it is said and subsequently married Rebecca Ll
ewellyn. He moved to Iowa with Rebecca and is believed to have raised se
veral children by her. Elizabeth and her children lived for many years i
n Madison County, Ill, where she became a member of the Church of Jesus C
hrist of Latter Day Saints about 1836. She died in Nauvoo, Ill, in 1842
. Children of William and Elizabeth, all born in Overton Co, except Levi
, who was born in Madison Co., Ill.
!MARRIAGE: 1) Elizabeth VanHooser (div); 2) Rebecca Lewellyn. SOURCE: Fam
ily record of William's son, Urban Van Stewart of Beaver, Utah.
Elizabeth Van Hooser moved to Nauvoo, IL where she had relatives and wa
s an early convert to the Mormon religion, along with her sons Riley, Lev
i, William Jackson and Urban Van. Elizabeth Stewart died on 28 Aug 184
3 at the age of 54 in Nauvoo, Ill and is buried in the Old Nauvoo Buria
l Ground. William & Elizabeth's sons were with the early Mormons who ende
d up in Utah. There are many descendants; however, not much seems record
ed about the second family. Levi & Urban both practiced pologamy & each h
ad several wives with Levi being the father of 28 children & Urvan Van th
e father of 32 children.

m. then married Rebecca Lewellyn. There were children by both marriages

s Joyce Lindstrom claims one other girl age 15-20. I did not find this f
emale in the 1840 census records that I checked. There was one other fem
ale in the 1830 census under the age of 5, which would have put her in th
e 15-20 age bracket on the 1840 census but she is not listed on the 184
0 census.

HISTORY: Abram or Abraham Van Hooser, b abt 1736 at Tulpehocken, Lancaste
r (now Berks) Co., Pa. He's named in his father's will which states, "An
d if he should never return..." He may have joined Captain Dobb's North C

s at Ft. Duquesne. Many of Braddock's men were massacred and Abraham ma
y have been among them. Or else he may have bene killed while fighting In
