HISTORY: Off the coast of Husum Germany was a large island, called Nordst
rand or Nordstrant. Here, Volkje Juriens or Jurrianse was born. In 163
4 a terrific gale hit the Island of Nordstgrand, causing the sea to brea
k down the island. Originally the island was quite large, but after thi
s catastrope, only the high ground remained. After the destruction of th
e island, many of the survivors were taken to the mainland for refuge. Vo
alke was probably taken tot he town of Husum, which is directly east of t
he islands. It is believed that she lost both of her parents in this stor
m. She had one sister, Annetje Juriaens, who was the wife of Andries Herb
ertsen Constapel. She witnessed Volkje's marriage to Jan Fransse in Holla
nd. Here Jan Fransse met Volkje Jurians and they fell in love. Before the
y got married, they'd already made arrangements on March 28, 1639 with Ki
liaen Van Renselaer concerning immediate passage to and settlement in th
e colonly of Rensselaerswyck. The colonists agreed to remain there for fo
ur years. This document also stated that their "ship now lies ready," bu
t they didn't set sail until after Jan Fransse and Volkje Juriens were ma
rried on Mary 15, 1639. The church banns of April 30, 1639 are translate
d thus: "Appeared as before, Jan Franz from Housum, sailor, age 30 years
, living in the Corte Tuijnstraat, having no parents but assisted by hi
s cousin, Anna Jans, and Volckje Juriaens (daughter?) from Noorstrant, ag
ed about 21 years, of the same (street), having no parents, but assiste
d by her acquaintance, Isaack Pietersen." They were married in the Dutc
h Reformed Church at Nieuwe Kerk at Amsterdam, Holland on May 15, 1639. A
fter the wedding they set sail on the ship, "Den Harlinck" in May 1639 an
d arrived in New Amsterdam on July 7, 1639; SOURCE: Van Hooser Family i
