The following is from A History of Two Families by Clayton Boyce and Dori
s Forbes Boyce, information provided by Linda Mae Boyce-Morgan:
Adrian Allen Boyce was born on April 10, 1901. In his younger years
, he went by the nickname "Jim." Where that came from I do not know, bu
t my mother identified him with that name in her photo album. I know litt
le about his life before he was married. His son Jim recalls his father t
elling him that prior to his marriage, Adrian worked for a time in Easter
n Washington on road-oiling jobs. He may have also worked in the fruit or
chards with Cecil and Ham. We have pictures of Adrian that were in my mot
her's album, taken in Prosser in 1922. Since he did not make the trip wit
h his mother and Cecil. Ham and Beryl, described earlier in this chapter
, he must have gone over there for a visit after they got there. Perhap
s he went over there to work at a later time.
Uncle Adrian was married to Doretta Bailer, the daughter of long tim
e island residents. For many years, they farmed the 280 acre Bailer far
m in San Juan Valley near False Bay. Adrian also did some commercial fish
ing in the early years of their marriage. During World War II, they live
d in Seattle for four years, where Adrian worked as a carpenter in a ship
yard. They then went back to San Juan Island, where they fanned until 195
9. That year they moved to Mt. Vernon, Washington, where they operate
d a dairy farm for many years. While living in Mt. Vernon, they were memb
ers of the Burlington Church of Christ.
Adrian and Doretta had two children. Their son, James Allen Boyce an
d his wile Donna live in Woodinville, Washington. Jim was born on Octobe
r 12, 1938. He graduated from Friday Harbor High School and from Washingt
on State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture, spe
cializing in dairy management. Jim worked for Arden Dairy for a short tim
e, but has worked for Safeway as a working manager in their milk plant si
nce 1963. Jim is also very interested in our family history and he has do
ne considerable research himself on our forebears. Jim grew up on San Jua
n Island, but in a later time period than when I would visit Grandma Boyc
e. Until I began writing this book, I had seen Jim only a few times befor
e, and this was when he was still a young boy. Since we have made contact
, Jim has furnished me with some valuable information on our Boyce ancest
ors that I did not have before.
Jim and his wife Donna have three children. Jolee is married to Wayn
e Boushee. Jeffrey and Jim are as yet unmarried.
Adrian and Doretta's daughter Linda is married to John Morgan and li
ves in Arco, Idaho. She and her husband have a son Robert, whose wife i
s named Mia. I have had no contact with Linda since she was a small girl
; however, I have learned that she also has been quite active in research
ing and gathering family history. No doubt that by the time this book i
s in print, we will have been in contact with each other in one way or th
e other.
One of the things I remember about my Uncle Adrian was the way he wo
uld look at me sort of sideways with a certain twinkle in his eye and a l
ittle grin. It always seemed like there was some hidden amusement back be
hind his outward expression. Although I was not around him all that muc
h when I was a kid, I remember that when I was, I would wait for him to a
cknowledge me with that particular look of his, and then when he did, I e
xperienced a satisfaction that is difficult to explain. He didn't talk a
s much as my dad, but when he did, I always made sure to listen, becaus
e he always had something interesting to say in that somewhat soft-spoke
n voice of his.
Uncle Adrian died of kidney failure on February 15, 1984 at age 84
. Aunt Doretta died in Idaho in March 1995. They are buried in Mt. Vernon
.
