The following is from A History of Two Families by Clayton Boyce and Dori
s Forbes Boyce, information provided by Linda Mae Boyce-Morgan:
James Hamilton "Ham" Boyce was born on January 5, 1903. Although my fathe
r told stories that included Ham, I cannot remember them, thus, I have n
o history on him until he went to Prosser in 1922 (see Page 17). There, H
am met his cousin Mildred Frances Harrris for the first time. We have pic
tures that were in my mother's photo album showing them together in Pross
er between 1922 and 1924, We also have pictures of Uncle Ham and my dad t
ogether taken in 1924, showing them with an apple-picking crew in one o
f the many orchards in rural Prosser. Other than those pictures, we hav
e no record of Ham and Mildred's activities between 1922 and 1929.
Uncle Ham and Aunt Mildred were married in Eureka, California on Decembe
r 14, 1929. I do not know how long they stayed in California. They left C
alifornia in their early married years and settled in Seattle. That is wh
ere my memory of them together begins.
I am not sure what he might have worked at before, but Uncle Ham was empl
oyed by Diesel Oil Sales Company for many years. Their headquarters was l
ocated on Northlake Avenue on the north end of Lake Union, not too far fr
om what is now Gasworks Park. It was from that company that he retired. F
or the most part, he delivered furnace oil all over Seattle. However, i
n the years prior to Word War II, he would often be sent put in the summe
r to work on a road-oiling job somewhere. He was the foreman on several o
n these jobs. On several occasions, he and my dad worked on the same job.
Aunt Mildred was the youngest of the children of James Harris and Mary Ca
therine Walter. She was born in Wenatchee, Washington on February 28, 190
6. I am not sure when the family moved to Prosser. We have a number of pi
ctures of Mildred when she was a girl, dating back to 1921. Mildred gradu
ated from Prosser High School, probably in 1923. We have a copy of her gr
aduation picture, but it is not dated.
Although I admired and looked up to all my uncles and aunts, for the majo
r part of my life, I was probably closer to Uncle Ham and Aunt Mildred. T
he main reason for this was that I stayed with them on many occasions whe
n my parents were gone from home on a highway construction job. When my p
arents were out on the road, if I wasn't staying with my grand-mother Alm
ira Boyce, I would stay with Uncle Ham and Aunt Mildred. Even when my par
ents were home, there were many times when they would put me on the bus o
r the train and I would come to Seattle to stay with Uncle Ham and Aunt M
ildred for a while. For me, this was like having a second home, and I alw
ays had a great time! I also lived with them for a while after I was ou
t of high school and was attending the University of Washington for the N
avy. And those occasions when they would come to Prosser to visit our fam
ily were always special for me.
Both Uncle Ham and Aunt Mildred were always faithful Christians. They wer
e long-time members of the Northwest Church of Christ, first at 410 Wes
t 62nd Street, and then at N. 81st Street and Stone Avenue N. Some year
s after Uncle Ham had passed away, Aunt Mildred was among those who reloc
ated to the present location of the Northwest church at 15555 15th Avenu
e N. E. Ham served as an elder of the Northwest church many years. Mildr
ed was a women who was admired and appreciated by those who knew her. Ha
m and Mildred were Bible teachers for many years as well. Both of them we
re highly respected Christian people.
Uncle Ham died of cancer in Seattle on September 29, 1975 at the age of 7
2. Aunt Mildred died in Vancouver, Washington on June 11, 1994 at the ag
e of 88.
Additional information is given for Mildred (Harris) Boyce in Chapter 4
. More about the times I spent with Uncle Ham and Aunt Mildred and my rel
ationship with them is found in my own story in Chapter 10.
Ham and Mildred had two children. Maryin Boyce was born in Seattle on Jun
e 7, 1935. She graduated from Lincoln High School. Maryin is married to R
alph Brown. They have four children. Deborah (Brown) Mitts, Kathy Brown
, Susan (Brown) Collins and Kristy (Brown) Blake. Early in their marriage
, Ralph and Maryin lived in Las Vegas, Nevada. They then lived in Seattl
e for a number of years and now live in Vancouver, Washington. Maryin wor
ked for many years as secretary for J. T. Bristow, a personal work missio
nary working out of the church in Vancouver. Ralph is retired from Standa
rd Oil Company of California.
Jim Boyce was born in Seattle on May 19, 1941. He graduated from Lincon H
igh School and attended Everett Junior College for two years. He then spe
nt a year in the United States Coast Guard, after which he returned to Ev
erett Junior College and obtained an Associate of Arts degree. Jim went t
o work for Sears Roebuck and Company while still going to school. While s
till working for Sears, he transferred his scholastic credits to the Univ
ersity of Washington and attended there for a time. Jim worked for Sear
s for ten years, serving as a retail store manager during the latter par
t of his career with that firm. Following his employment with Sears, Ji
m went to work for the Robbins Company, distributors of tunnel-boring an
d mining equipment. After twelve years with that firm, he left there beca
use the company got into an economic crunch. He then worked for Pacific W
estern Industries, an aircraft parts manufacturing company, where he even
tually became an Executive Vice President. He is now in business for hims
elf as an independent manufacturing consultant. Interestingly, Robbins Co
mpany, his former employer, is one of his present customers.
Jim is married to Patricia "Tatty" Barnett. They were married on Decembe
r 23, 1984. Jim was formerly married to Maxine Wheeler, with whom he ha
d three children, Lisa and twins Timothy and Anthony Boyce.
