HISTORY: John Van Hooser, (Valentine 4, John 3, Johannes 2, Jan Fransse 1) eldest son of Valentine (Felty) Van Hooser or Velten Van Hoesen and Maria Barbara Zerwe or Zerbe, was christened 23 May 1748 at Zion's Blue Mountain Church in Tulpehocken Twp., Lancaster (now Berks), Co., Pa. When he was about three or four years old, he moved with his parents to Rowan Co., NC where he grew to manhood.
In 1774 he moved with his father to Fincastle Co., Va and in 1775 moved to North Fork of the Clinch River in what is now Tazewell Co, Va. Since he was the oldest son, and probably married by that time, he made an improvement on the land beside his father's This is according to Chalkey's Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Augusta Co., Va., Vol. 11, pp. 227-8. In 1777 the family moved back to what became Montgomery (later Grayson and still later Carroll Co., Va. in 1842). There John took up several acres of land.
John was probably married either in Rown or Surry Co., NC. It is not knonw who he married. In 1787 he moved to Green Co., Tenn. about the same time his brother, Jacob, moved. When Jefferson Co. was created from Greene Co. in 1792, John found himself living in Jefferson Co. He sold 210 acres of land in Greene Co., Tenn. 1 Nov 1792 to John Woolsey, which was located on the branches of Lick Creek.
While John Van Hooser lived in Jefferson Co., Tenn., he lived near New Market. Since there's no early census of Tennessee, the 1800 tax list of Jefferson Co., Tenn. lists John Van Hooser with 270 acres of land. He's not listed as head of a household in the 1830 census because he was living with is widowed duagher, Rachel Callahan, and was listed in the age 80 to 90 age bracket. In 1840, he's listed as head of a household and was in the 90 to 100 age bracket. In 1850 he was living in Hugh Vanhooser's home aged 115. The "Southern Advocate" newspaper in Huntsville, Alabama dated 18 Sep 1850 states, "John Vanhoozer died near New Market, Tennessee on the 1st, aged 122 years." Actually he was only 102 years old, which shows how some newspapers exaggerate the news. Nor can I account for the exaggeration of his age in the 1850 census of Jefferson Co., Tenn.
